Public Talks in April and May 2009

APRIL 12 - In bits and pieces of time in between trying to deal with the meltdown of the North American auto industry, I will be giving several more public talks based on Economics for Everyone in several Canadian cities over the next few weeks.  Here are the details ... hope to see you there!

CALGARY, WEDNESDAY APRIL 22:  Two talks sponsored by the Arusha Centre and several community partners (call 403-270-3200 for info).  Tickets $10 for each event.

12:00 noon, Parkdale United Church (2919 8 Ave. NW)

Do a Puzzle! Watch a Movie!

Who says economics has to be boring, anyway?

Here are a couple of items to liven up economics literacy courses: a word search puzzle and a list of movies ... newly posted here in our Resources section!

Feedback on both (including suggestions for more movies, and more puzzles) is heartily welcomed at author@economicsforeveryone.com.

More e4e Events: Montreal, Vancouver, Kingston, Ottawa

JANUARY 5, 2009 -- I will be speaking about Economics for Everyone, linking it to the global financial crisis, at several more public events across Canada in the next few weeks.  Here's the calendar -- I'd love to see you there!

MONTREAL, TUESDAY JANUARY 20

Recession or Depression?
THE ECONOMIC CRISIS and the DECLINE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS
(With Kari Polanyi-Levitt)
Time: 7 pm,
Place: Atwater Library, 1200 Atwater ave. near St.Catherine west (Metro Atwater)

VANCOUVER, FRIDAY JANUARY 30

The Workers' Economist!

NOVEMBER 20, 2009 -- We had a most excellent public meeting on e4e in St. Catharines Ontario last week (on Nov. 13).  It was hosted at the CAW Local 199 hall. Many thanks especially to President Wayne Gates, who presided at the meeting, just getting over some major health challenges.  Also to Peter Scott, organizer extraordinaire, who pulled the logistics togther.

Over 100 people attended (sadly, fire restrictions turned some away).  Many guests of honour included Malcolm Allen, newly-minted MP for Welland and long-time CAW local leader.

Financial Meltdown

NOVEMBER 1, 2008 -- There's nothing like a good old-fashioned financial panic to inspire a lot of popular interest in economics.  If it weren't for the huge amount of fear and suffering this crisis is imposing on average people, I'd say this was a great time to be an economist!  I'm getting an incredible number of inquiries, from reporters, union members, and readers, all wondering what it means.

e4e Web Site Comments

NOVEMBER 1, 2008 -- I've been receiving a decent flow of commentary on the book through the feedback feature of this website.  Here is a selection of a few of the comments received.  Thanks to everyone who has submitted comments, praise, criticism, and suggestions for future editions.

Three More Reviews

OCTOBER 20, 2008 -- I am blushing, really blushing.  Three more extremely kind reviews of Economics for Everyone have appeared in various publications from Canada's left.  Here are some choice bits, with links to the full reviews.  I am very humbled by the support this project is getting from the incredibly hard-working people who make social change happen on the ground.  Thank you very, very much!

Report on More Launch Events

OCTOBER 7, 2008 -- I've had a great time visiting a few cities and giving talks based on Economics for Everyone in several cities over the past few weeks.

My trip through Manitoba and Saskatchewan featured two evening talks in Winnipeg and Regina, organized in each case by the local branch of the CCPA (attracting about 75 people at each), and a smaller presentation hosted by the fine progressive economists at the University of Manitoba.

New Resources

SEPTEMBER 19, 2008 -- I am gradually making some progress at getting the supplementary curriculum material and other resources for Economics for Everyone posted up here.

Check the Resources page for the latest -- including a set of "How-To" guides for those who are inspired enough to try their own crunching of the economic numbers (there are guides for GDP, inflation, labour market, and corporate financial data).

Vancouver Province Review and Profile

SEPTEMBER 2: Labour Day was the hook for the Vancouver Province to run a nice story on Economics for Everyone, complete with full-length photo of the author (Aussie friends take note: you can see I am wearing my RMWilliams shit-kickers!).

Here's a somewhat fuzzy pdf of the original story.
